A reflection of our society seen from a variety of perspectives that can only be expressed through performance art, brought together in a revolutionary ensemble of contemporary Theatre

- Maurice Spees

“Mae-Nam / Mother of Water” - A multidisciplinary contemporary theatre piece for the advocacy of HIV/AIDS, gender and sexuality in the Mekong Region: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines and Indonesia. A performance that clearly made an impact in developing and -by developing awareness for the people affected.

For this unique endevor in Collaboration with Japanese Butoh Dance Director Sonoko Prow’s fresh new Khandha Arts’n Theatre Company we brought together a group of formely unexperienced but dedicated artists from Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

While Sonoko directed the physical part, visualantis took care of the entire technical and audiovisual side of the production. As a co-director Maurice contributed his artistic approach and video art as well as the soundtrack for the performance. Altogether Visualantis has helped not only to make this performance, but also everyone involved successful. During the entire production a behind the scenes documentary was made, which helped emerge the new Khandha Arts’n Theatre group, and each performer to showcase their work. We created their website, showreels and extended the platform of Thai performance art once more.

Most artists involved after this performance formed the new Butoh & Contemporary Performance Art group from Khandha Arts’n Theatre.

Altogether Mother of Water created a promising ensemble, merging together diverse and innovating styles of theatre, media and performance art, with an inspiring approach to both Thai fine-art and Thai’s entertainment scene. Even while we did not meet all of our own intentions, it was a promising experience for all people involved and makes Khandha Arts’n theatre able to continue their endeavors to become even better at what they do.

A performance entirely driven by both it’s aesthetic and pedagogic values.

By working closely together with Thailand based HIV/AIDS foundations -and non-profits- our intention was to create an impact that not only helps raise awareness within our society, but also creates an excellent platform for relating organizations to speak out.
